MONTREAL – Police were conducting simultaneous raids to dismantle drug-trafficking rings in the Montreal area Wednesday, with several police forces involved.
Quebec’s provincial force was conducting 56 raids in Montreal, Laval, Repentigny and Terrebonne with 285 police officers from the Surete du Quebec, Montreal police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Surete Sgt. Benoit Richard said.
The raids are aimed at dismantling a cocaine and marijuana drug import-export network and members of the Mafia are said to be involved, Richard said.
However, police said they did not plan on making any arrests Wednesday. They were mainly gathering evidence, Richard said.
Meanwhile, Montreal police were conducting their own separate drug-ring bust Wednesday, with seven raids and seven arrests planned in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district, Montreal police Const. Olivier Lapointe said.
That network is believed to be responsible for trafficking of cocaine and crack by criminal biker gangs, Lapointe said.
