There was some unusual air traffic at the Edmonton International Airport Friday afternoon, as a legendary WWII-era transport plane touched down en route to the far north.
A C-46 Commando, piloted by Devan Brooks from the documentary series Ice Pilots NWT, may a brief stop in Edmonton to pick up supplies en route to an oil spill in the Northwest Territories.
"It’s flown the ‘hump’ in the world war, from China to Burma to India," Brooks says.
The C-46 earned its esteemed status during WWII, braving extreme weather conditions to deliver supplies to allied troops in Asia.
It’s reputation as a rugged cargo transport means many of the aircraft are still operating today, many servicing remote northern locations.
"They built ’em tough for the war and especially up in the Northwest Territories you need tough airplanes up there for some of the stuff we do," Brooks says.
Brooks and his crew are bound for Wrigley, NWT where Enbridge crews are working to clean up a four-barrel spill from the Norman Wells pipeline.
