Bulletproof business plan

What started off as a high-school science project has turned into a career for a St. Albert man.

"We actually have a full line of products including hard armour plating, soft body armour – anything from textiles to badges," says Darren Schulte, founder of Line of Fire Inc.

Back in 2007 Schulte presented an idea for body armour at a school fair. Four years later his company is manufacturing body armour for SWAT teams throughout North America.

Some Edmonton Police Service members are wearing the armour, as are FBI agents and members of Special Operations Command Europe.

"He’s done an extraordinary job getting this company to this state," company president Rory Milikin says of Schulte. "This product has an armour system unlike anything in the world."

However, despite the company’s home-grown success, they’ve so far been unable to crack the military market.

"I’ve put pressure on all of their offices to at least test our armour, get us onto the ranges and let us show you what this can do," Milikin says.

Milikin is determined to see Canadian soldiers wearing Schulte’s armour, and will continue to pitch his company’s products to government officials.
