The federal government and Telus have announced plans for a large-scale AI data centre project in British Columbia they say will boost Canada’s sovereign computing and artificial-intelligence infrastructure.
The project announced by AI Minister Evan Solomon and Telus in Vancouver will involve three facilities in B.C. which Telus says will deliver “one of the world’s most powerful and sustainable AI infrastructure clusters.”

It’s part of a federal initiative announced last year to identify and boost large-scale sovereign data centres.
Telus says it will expand its existing Kamloops data centre and develop two new Vancouver facilities in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood and in the city’s downtown.
The Kamloops expansion and the Mount Pleasant facility will open later this year, while the downtown facility will come online in 2029.
The government says the project will support domestic innovation involving both academia and industry.
Disgusting to completely steamroll all public and professional protest against these projects. Governments work FOR the people not the other way around! This situation is begging for a revolution
Sovereign computing? Half the time you call and agency you get transfered to a call center in India….
Don’t be compromising my depended on fresh tap water and/or bottled water to drink in a drought prone world where birds/wildlife and trees are dying. I will not pay a cent more for water or electricity to bankroll tech-no-heck-no-guys scheme to ruin the world’s ecology and the existential being of human beings for an unnecessary gadget. Leave well enough alone! I will not be taxed or pay for in anyway for those unemployed due to AI data centers, any and all profits made, must be made to pay for unemployed redundancies and water and electricity squandered. And I am not a serf living within the dark enlightenment anti-egalitarian anti-democracy feudalism! I am not serf-dumb! This is about avarious greed at human and ecological expense! This is being ushered in without approval of “we the people” due to get rich quick government employees within so called democracies. Sell-outs!
