There is only one trade negotiator for Canada and it’s the federal government, Prime Minister Mark Carney said when asked about Conservative MPs meeting U.S. trade representatives.
Conservative MP Jamil Jivani was back in Washington on Wednesday with a handful of Tory colleagues for a meeting with Canadian business interests and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, The Canadian Press reported on Wednesday.
Canadian Ambassador Mark Wiseman was also in attendance.
On Thursday, Carney was asked what he made of the efforts by the Conservatives.
“We’re both free countries, so people can go where they wish,” Carney said.
“In the end, there’s one negotiator for Canada, and that is the government of Canada. Our interlocutors in the United States are generous people, they’re generous with their time and it’s good of them to meet a host of Canadians coming down. But in end they know, and we know that we’re the negotiators,” he added.
The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, also known as CUSMA, is up for renegotiation this summer.

On Wednesday morning, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was asked who Jivani was meeting with and what he hoped to achieve.
“I don’t have any information on that at this point to share,” he said. “Our MPs have been consistently going to Washington to fight for tariff-free trade.”
Poilievre also said the Carney government “should use every relationship we have as Canadians” to help secure a trade deal with the U.S.
Later in the day, a spokesperson for Poilievre’s office said that “a delegation” of Tory MPs was in Washington “carrying the Conservative party’s Team Canada message.”
That group included Conservative finance critic Shuvaloy Majumdar, foreign affairs critic Michael Chong and MPs Jacob Mantle and Corey Tochor.

Like Iran, Carney has already lost his war against the USA but he is too proud to admit it and pretends his is winning.
CUSMA is a pipe dream now since Canada violated it with retaliatory tariffs on CUSMA protected items. USA did not violate CUSMA, Canada did.
Rightnuts know Canadians don’t want them in power and doesnt want these looser representing them. They already showed them when they chosed a looser PP to lead them. Now, they are playing pretend elected games. That all these nobodies can do. Pretend. LOL!
one negotiator. didnt he just appoint a advisory committee. what are they advising? goooo carney
I can do a better job negotiating then Mark Carney
@Duke. So wait another 3 years? What if GOP gets the WH again in 2028. Canadians want action not more doing nothing like the past 10 years.
Jawole mein fuhrer!
So Carney entire 2025 election campaign was that he was the only guy who could get a deal with Trump. He stated he was a master negotiator, knew Donald Trump and understood how the world works. Huge promises.
A year later, Carney has got nothing and tariffs are higher than when Trudeau resigned. Carney has not delivered and now pretending he didn’t make a large promise to Canadians
Fun to watch Trump dominate weak, spineless Carney who speaks with a forked tongue and flip flops daily.
No deal with the dictator Trump, wait until for a real President who knows NA partnership. The people of the US hates him and will get thrown out. Keep dealing with others and any future deals with the US will be gravy.
Look at the unelected no elbow trators acting like they’re they’re in power. It’s like D Smith going to the dictator’s inaugural. A bunch of spineless brown nose.
Kinda sounds like something a King would say. Elbows up and on your knees Libs!
Hopefully Carney finds that one Negotiator soon . Haha
Elbows Up Carney promised a trade deal by end of July 2025. It is now May 2016. Carney and his sidekick Leblanc have totally struck out against Trump.
Next thing Carney will do is say that this is not the right time fot the Federal Government to do anything as far as trade with the U.S., but when the time is right he will act with decisive action and strike a deal for future generations.
That will calm the situation long enough for him to create yet another shuffleboard on the Liberal Showboat .
Carney is using friction with the US to boost his popularity. His followers just seem to eat this up, it’s just more Justin.
Beer and wings and sweet potato fries
Is this like last time where conservatives went to the USA to talk about seperation Alberta from Canada? Or like when Ford went down and achieved literally nothing and ended up upseting the administration?
How exactly does them going down help when they don’t have any legal precedent to do so? Like… Legally speaking they can’t even offer or negotiate so they’re just going down for what exactly? Beer and wings?
So if you’re the only one who can negotiate, why aren’t you negotiating? Carney is playing fast and loose with Canadians livelihoods for petty political gain.
You haven’t negotiated. All you did was compitulate when you did meet, and haven’t met since. What a weak and insecure man.
Carney is running out of time.In 9 years from now the slower Canadians, aka Liberal Voters, will turn on him like they did with the Boy Blunder if he hasn’t produced.
Mind you by then Canada will either be the 51st state,a Province of China,New India or an asset of Brookfield.
I changed my pronouns to he/him
So that is why I joined the Liberals.
A paperboy has more negotiating skills than Elbows Up Carney.
Well Carney seems to have dropped the ball,
We’ve been listening to Carney waffle along for a year now.
What are the conservatives trying to do? No power, no mandate and not representing Canada. Stay in your lane and quit trying to be something you will never be
Don’t worry. I got a meeting next Tuesday, I’ll get a deal. I’ll make sure to let all US products into Canada tariff free and allow the US to put 20% on all our stuff and agree to send 500 Billion in investments their way.
Imagine MPs of all stripes trying to negotiate on behalf of ALL Canadians…..wonder what that would look like.
@Ben
” I don’t want our sovereignty sold to the US”
Tell me Ben, what’s your favourite kool-Aid flavour? Is it red?
What do you think would happen without US trade? You can’t seriously be that obtuse?
So looks like this goofball looking guy wants to be the cpc leader?
Max maduro carnage has no intentions to negotiate ANYTHING for Canadians. His only objective is to bankrupt the country as his personal play toy.
Considering the actual government has been no negotiations in the last 6 months, a more accurate title for this article should be …”There is no negotiator for Canada as Conservatives meet U.S. on trade”
Imagine a sitting MP doing something positive for their constituents, instead of sitting around and watching the false majority destroy key trade relations over their pathetic emotions
Liberals will bankrupt Canada
Wow…everybody criticizing Mr.Carney…saying the TELUS COLLECTION AGENT is a better choice! There are no words.
Well at least the Tories are trying, and who again is the person negotiating, cause this clown Carney has only did more damage. And continues to make dumb Utubes!
Carney is handling it. The Con Reformers think they are going to negotiate with Trump?! You can’t trust this regime. They have broken the law by reneging on the existing trade agreement. Waiting for the mid terms.
Butt out Jivani. Unless you were just sofa shopping with your buddy JD.
@Duke. Currently the CPC is the Offical Opposition and job is to hold the Govt to account. So they are relevant.
Suck it up Buttercup
Mexico is miles ahead, USA opened up to negotiation last fall and carney still has not shown up. He wants EU Bloc access instead to force carbon trade ETS in Canada to shore up weak support for it in the EU and a whole new market in Canada.
Carney majority mandate is to enrich his Brookfield funds he started and still holds massive investments in (they can’t be traded away and expire 2030)
What a joke…Tories trying desperately to find some relevance….try finding a leader instead
Carney is scared that others might get more results than he has which is nothing so far to date.
In a literal sense the country of Canada has dozens of negotiators. In a figurative sense if we do have a chief negotiator I would love to know who they are and what theyve been doing for the last 12 months…
Carney has been a massive failure so far on the trade deal with the USA
Sucking up to Dumpster
Carney is a weak leader and negotiator. Total amateur hour and a disgrace.
“But in end they know, and we know that we’re the negotiators,” he added.”
If he has to say this out loud, shows just how weak they are.
The conservatives are no doubt telling the US that Canada can give up this or that for a deal. Just deplorable! And the critics of Carney saying we should have a deal. No. I don’t want my government selling out our sovereignty to the US like Poilivere and the Conservatives would.
Whinny people who somehow have forgotten it all started with Pierre Trudeau, And carried on by Mulroney and his failed son.
Carney doesn’t live in Canada, he doesn’t give a f@!k
We know that Carney is no good at negotiating. After a year, he has struck out against superior Trump who has dominated Carney
I hope this somethingbhe is going to follow thru with.
Well why isn’t the federal government negotiating on trade like Carney promised over a year ago. No instead he concentrated on buying a majority government so he can do whatever he wanted without answering to the Canadian people in an election
If you can’t backup the ELECTED officials, get out of the way.
I hope the NDP, Green Party, Bloc all get down there also.-lol What a way to show our unification, when one party (PC )have a seperate agenda with no power, authority,PP today, tomorrow nor near future. I hope we taxpayers are not funding this… PPs job as opposition has gotta be the easiest vocation. Say the opposite to governing body, come up with not proven “better” plan that never needs details cause it will never amount to anything. I think he’s struggling as Carneys’ ideas/strategy seem more PC than PPs.
Team Canada for this is only Carney and his Liberal cronies. How many times did Lard Ford go down with no results like Carney & Trudeau.
What about non union apprentices? Any time I hear about union incentives, I worry about more union, particularly public sector unions, and corruption. It seems like as usual, the liberals are once again buying voters.
