Penhorwood condo residents begin removing belongings

Almost two months after residents were suddenly evacuated from the Penhorwood Condo complex in Fort McMurray, they are finally being allowed back in to retrieve their belongings.

The seven buildings in the complex were condemned after being deemed structurally unsound, and there was initially some question as to whether or not residents would even be allowed back inside to retrieve belongings.

In April, the condo board approved the funds to reinforce the buildings so that residents would have the chance to remove their belongings.

Movers are now removing resident’s posessions from the building, one unit at a time.

"This process will continue for the next month until we’ve moved all of the furniture and belongings out and residents have their stuff back." said condo board member Christine Burton.

An investigation is currently being done to determine whether or not it is financially viable to repair the buildings, or if they should be demolished.

Residents have been asked to find another place to live for up to a few years.

A decision on the future of the complex is expected in June.
