TORONTO – Apple released a software update Tuesday for devices running OS X, fixing a major security flaw discovered over the weekend that left users susceptible to hackers and eavesdroppers on public networks.

An Apple spokesperson confirmed that the OS X 10.9.2 software update, released Tuesday afternoon, fixes the SSL encryption issue for both the Mavericks and Mountain Lion versions of Apple’s desktop operating system.

The security vulnerability was discovered late Friday after Apple released a software update for iOS devices that fixed a flaw in its SSL/TLS protocols, which helps keep personal information encrypted.

It was later discovered that flaw also affected Apple’s OS X operating system, but a fix was not immediately available.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) are both encryption protocols that help keep personal information private while browsing on secure sites, such as online banking sites. This also helps protect against “eavesdroppers” who may use a public Wi-Fi network to spy on what should be private communications.

“Effectively, this vulnerability allows a moderately sophisticated attacker to monitor your communications with even the most secure sites and services,” said Ashkan Soltani, an independent security researcher on Monday.

Apple users can update their computers by choosing the Apple menu, located at the top left hand side of their screen, and clicking on software update.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod users must update their devices to iOS 7.0.6 to fix the software issue.

Users can go to their Settings menu, tap General, and “Software Update,” to download and install the latest iOS software.
