Proposed budget being debated tonight at City Hall

REGINA – It could be a lengthy night at City Hall as council debates just how much to raise your taxes.

The 2014 proposed budget calls for the average homeowner to pay upwards of $200 more per year to own their home, sparking a lot of controversy among residents.

Sixteen people are scheduled to go before council tonight, and only one seems to be in favour of what the city has laid out in the budget.

Most are against the seven per cent property tax increase, saying the hike goes beyond what residents can afford.

There’s also a proposed eight per cent jump in utility rates. That will cost the average homeowner another $120 more per year.

Even though the budget is set to be approved this evening Mayor Michael Fougere says tonight’s discussion will be vital to shaping the final budget.
