Ice hockey dominates online chatter about the Olympics

TORONTO – Ice hockey dominated the conversation surrounding the Sochi Olympics on social media, especially in Canada as users celebrated gold medal wins for both the women’s and men’s teams.

Canada’s sport beat out figure skating to take the No. 1 spot as the most talked about Olympic sport on Facebook.

Figure skating was the No. 1 talked-about sport on Facebook in Canada, the U.S., and Russia during the first week of the Sochi Olympics. But overall figure skating came in as the No. 2 most talked-about sport throughout the two weeks of competition in Sochi.

Bobsleigh, curling, and luge also made the top 5 most talked about sports on Facebook.

Canadian hockey player Carey Price also made the top 5 most talked about athletes on Facebook – he was the only Canadian to make the list.

Almost 45 million Facebook users took to their news feed to discuss the Olympics from Feb. 6 to Feb. 23, creating 120 million combined posts, comments, and “likes.”

According to Facebook’s data, men aged 18 to 34 were the biggest demographic chatting about the Olympics, following by women of the same age group.

Hockey was also a huge topic of conversation for Canadians on Twitter, especially when it came to the men’s gold medal game on Sunday.

Many Team Canada related hashtags were trending on Twitter during the game – including the #hardtotrashtalkSweden hashtag, showing the true sportsmanship of Canadian fans.

Some of the most shared photos on Twitter from the Olympic Games included photos of Team Canada in action, including a photo of team members on the ice after beating out Finland in overtime in the quarterfinals.
