B.C.’s South Coast could see snow Friday night: Snowfall warning for Victoria

Possibility of snow for B.C.'s South Coast Friday night. Global News

Residents of B.C.’s South Coast could see up to 5 cm on snow Friday night and into Saturday morning, while a snowfall warning has already been issued for Greater Victoria.

Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon says a new system is moving across the South Coast tonight. The temperature will drop to about 1 and if it stays at 1 then the South Coast will just see rain.

However, Gordon says this type of scenario is the most difficult to forecast as there are a number of things that can happen.

First scenario:

The temperature will stay around 1, meaning it will rain all night and into Saturday morning. Higher elevations will see wet snow. This is the same as the system that moved in two weekends ago when there was the possibility of snow for the South Coast.

Second scenario:

As the system moves in, the precipitation will fall as snow and the South Coast could get up to 5 cm across the region.

Third scenario:

The system will transition between snow and rain, and at this point Gordon says the amount of snow is difficult to forecast. The precipitation could start as rain, then the intensity of the rain could cool the air mass so much it could change to snow. This transition could happen at any time overnight and into tomorrow morning.

There is a snowfall warning for Greater Victoria in place. Higher elevations, particularly the Malahat Highway, could see up to 15 cm of snow starting Friday night and into Saturday.
