Update: As of late Friday afternoon, the Saskatchewan government has given “blanket” approval for bars in the province to open at 5:30 a.m. Sunday for Canada’s appearance in the men’s Olympic gold medal hockey game. This excludes the city of Prince Albert, which has asked explicitly not to be included in this approval.
REGINA – Canada will be going for gold in men’s hockey Sunday morning, and hockey fans in Regina will have the chance to take in the game at some of their favourite local watering holes.
The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) confirmed on Friday that nine Regina bars have been given permission to open their doors at 5:30 a.m. before the puck drops in the Olympic men’s gold medal game. Normally, bars aren’t allowed to serve before 9:30 a.m.
The nine bars that have been approved by the SLGA in Regina are O’Hanlons, Leopolds, The Owl, Lancasters, Boston Pizza East, Smitty’s North Albert, The Last Straw, Western Pizza Broadway and Creekside Pub and Brewery .
“It seems like a good Canadian thing to be doing – showing the Olympics in a sports bar,” said Corey Tyacke of Shark Club Saskatoon, which has also received approval to open early on Sunday.
