Tornado watches across eastern U.S.

WATCH: Severe weather sweeping through U.S. Alison Harmelin reports

TORONTO – Tornado watches have been issued in a wide swath of the eastern United States from North Carolina to New Jersey.

This is the second day that severe storms have affected parts of the U.S.

The U.S. National Weather Service is calling for active weather east of the Mississippi River, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms this afternoon.

The NWS has already received numerous reports of high winds across all the states under the watches, as well as three possible tornado sightings in Georgia.

Earlier this afternoon a tornado warning was issued for Washington, D.C.

A watch is issued when conditions are favourable for severe weather. A warning is when hazardous weather is imminent or occurring.
