International women’s day, last minute winter getaways, a proposed metal processing facility in Langham, puppies and oil recovery at the Canadian Light Source highlight the Morning News for Thursday, Feb. 20.
Jessica gets more insight into international women’s day from BPW Saskatoon
It’s great there’s an event supporting the success of women, let alone a whole day. Tammy and Sue gave me great insight into how far women have really come, highlighting voting as one of our greatest feats.
The dinner is Tuesday, March 4th, and my boss, the one and only Lisa Ford is nominated for an Athena Award, so let’s all go out and support her!
Kevin is dreaming of warmth and sunshine to shake the winter blahs
Welp, with no promise of true, sustainable warmth in the books for March, Barb Crowe is right; March is a great time to get away, take in some sun, and forget about these winter blahs.
I haven’t noticed it too dramatically on my own end, but it’s been a long winter, and seasonal affective disorder is surely affecting more than one of us.
End it with a week in paradise, and come back in time for a spring melt.
Melissa looks at work the CLS is doing to recover oil in an environmentally safer way

It was my first time exploring the Canadian Light Source facility and my first reaction was immediate intimidation. But after speaking with Jeremy about his project he made it easier to understand.
The notion of being able to recover oil in an environmentally safer way is such as step forward for western Canada. And a bit of information that we did not have time to include this morning was that they are also looking for ways to do this without the use of chemicals.
It is great to see such amazing research being done in our city.
Robin Goad address concerns over a Langham metal facility with Kevin
Robin Goad is a patient man.
Four years into his plans for Fortune Minerals to open a metals processing plant here in Saskatchewan, after passing every hurdle offered up by the Government of Saskatchewan regarding their environmental process, the hurdles just keep coming.
Caltrops, tossed abroad by those who don’t believe the fullness of the environmental assessment, work to deny Goad his zoning permits out in Langham.
I don’t like it.
I have a capitalist approach to things. One cannot complain about $9-million worth of salaries from high-skilled workers being added to the province. The trickle-down effect is why. Naysayers need to conduct their own studies on their own dimes instead of just shaking their heads vigorously. Don’t look a bismuth horse in the mouth.
Kevin is always smitten by puppies in Adopt a Pet
Always a treat seeing adorable little puppies stop on by. So many brothers and sisters of Beau and Lily are available at the shelter right now, as well! From my experience, they positively crave that social interaction that one only finds from a pup that didn’t really get all that much.
A reminder that National Cupcake Day is on February 24th – stop by your local SPCA and pick up a delicious treat, courtesy of Cupcake Conspiracy, and the funds raised will go toward making our local shelter that much better!
Melissa head back to camp – a blues music camp that is
What a great group of kids!
They are so passionate about music and sharing that experience with their peers. It was also refreshing to see how much they cared about one another and the theme of bullying.
When I spoke with Victoria, I could see in her eyes that this experience meant so much to her. These kids have been working so hard to get a great show ready.
If you’re in town this Saturday, head on down to Buds and cheer on a great group of musicians!
