WATCH: $65 million hotel and conference centre proposed for downtown Kelowna

KELOWNA – An Edmonton based development company hopes to build a hotel and conference centre in downtown Kelowna.

Westcorp has submitted an application seeking approvals for the 24 story structure projected to cost $65 million.

The company says the hotel would employ about 100 people and guests would pump about $20 million a year into the local economy.

“With our hotel, together with the Delta Grand, Kelowna will I believe be able to attract a lot more larger conferences than it does now,” says Westcorp spokesperson Gail Temple.

The executive director of the Downtown Kelowna Association is excited about the project, saying it will further revitalize the area.

“It’s really going to animate the Kerry Park and City Park area. There will be a restaurant and cafe, even an outdoor fireplace facing Kerry Park, so people can enjoy the amenities. People like to hang out by the water,” says Peggy Athans.

If the company gets past various development approval hurdles, the hotel could be open for business about three years from now.
