Russia takes gold, silver – Canada places 5th in pairs figure skating at Sochi

Canada’s Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch came 5th in Wednesday’s pairs competition, as Russian stars Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov took the gold.

Volosozhar and Trankov, skating to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” scored a total of 236.86 points, easily clinching the victory. Their teammates Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov got silver with a combined score of 218.68.

Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy took the bronze with a score of 215.78.

Moore-Towers and Moscovitch went into the free skate in 6th place and achieved a combined score of 202.10.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford finished in 7th place, with a score of 199.53, after Duhamel fell once and stumbled on another landing.

The third Canadian pair, Paige Lawrence and Rudi Sweigers, finished 14th.

The top two Canadian pairs won silver medals in the team event earlier in the Olympics. Russia won gold.
