The University of B.C. is the Âlatest Canadian school to catch ÂLipDub fever – a virulent disease that causes students to stop doing their homework and transform, if only for 15 minutes, into YouTube sensations.
A video produced and directed by UBC fine arts student Andrew Cohen brought together more than a thousand people lip-synching to a Âmedley of pop songs in one continuous shot almost ten minutes in length.
It was filmed at the university’s Point Grey campus on March 26.
UBC is not the first university to catch the fever: In 2009, students at the University of Montreal covered the Black Eyed Peas hit “I Got A Feeling.” The video on YouTube racked up over eight million views.
In spring 2010, students of Spain’s University of Vic busted out with their own uplifting sync of Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister,” which garnered 1.3 million views and inspired the UBC attempt.
UBC’s LipDub features “Celebrity Status” by Marianas Trench, Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” and other hits songs.
Cohen told UBC’s student newspaper the Ubyssey that the aim of the video was to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation, for children with life-threatening illnesses. Organizers are looking for corporate pledges of between $0.01 and $1.00 for every hit on YouTube in the first 30 days, and already have several partners.
Co-producer Bijan Ahmadian told the student paper he expects the Âvideo to be the most watched LipDub ever.
The video was posted to YouTube on Friday and by Saturday had already been viewed 77,000 times.
