Olympic officials admitted Monday that they are using volunteers to fill out the crowds at some events in Sochi.
In a press conference, Aleksandra Kosterina, spokesperson for Sochi 2014, told reporters that while 90 per cent of tickets at most events have been sold, volunteers are sometimes asked to sit in.
“Depends on the events,” she said. “If we see that there is not a turnout and there are spots available, then yes, we invite some of the volunteers to join in.”
By contrast, according to the Vancouver Organizing Committee, over 97 per cent of tickets at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics were sold.
