Anniversary of horrific hit-and-run prompts appeal from police

CALGARY- A plea for help has gone out, in hopes it will lead to an arrest in a shocking hit-and-run that left a mother dead.

Last February, 56-year-old Wong Shuk Yee, known as Rachel, was hit by two vehicles while walking to work in the community of Sandstone. Both fled the scene.

An hour after the crash, one of the drivers turned himself in, but police are still searching for the other one.

“I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the second driver knows what happened or knew they were involved in a collision, and for reasons that remain their own they just haven’t come forward,” says Sgt. Colin Foster from the Calgary Police Traffic Unit.

Investigators have tried everything to track down the suspect, from putting up signs in the neighbourhood, distributing flyers in multiple languages, even holding a rally.

However, the more time that goes by, the more they wonder how anyone could live with themselves, knowing they’re responsible for the death of an innocent woman.

“We’re still hoping for that one piece of information that will allow us to find the person responsible and bring them to justice,” Foster says. “Society expects me to find that person, the family of the deceased expects me to find that person, and I want to find that person because they should be held accountable for what they’ve done.”

In the mean time, Rachel’s family is struggling to find closure.

“We miss her a lot,” says Rachel’s neice Flora Stephenson. “There’s anger, there’s frustration, there’s pain, tears.”

She adds that Rachel’s daughter is still trying to make sense of the tragedy.

“She’s still having a hard time with this. There are times she will wake up in the middle of the night and say ‘Why? Why did they leave? It was my mom, why?’ So she’s still struggling with that.”

Police are searching for a small, dark-coloured sedan in connection with the case.
