Family of hit and run victim calls Good Samaritan an ‘angel’

CALGARY- More details are emerging about the woman killed in a shocking hit and run in the community of Sandstone on Wednesday morning.

56-year-old Wong Shuk Yee, known to friends as Rachel, worked with seniors as a caregiver at the Wing Kei Care Centre. Co-workers, who have been collecting donations for Yee’s family, remember her as friendly and a hard worker.

“When I see Rachel, she’s so organized, so dedicated and so responsible,” says Kathy Tam, who works at the care centre. “If you need anything done, you go to Rachel.”

A memorial is growing at the scene of the crash, where Yee was hit by at least two vehicles. Tonja Beech was sitting in her kitchen when she heard the crash, and ran out to the street to hold Yee’s hand as she died.

“I’ve been trying to deal with it, but I find it very hard, because I think about the lady all the time,” she says. “Every time I walk out my door, it’s right there.”

She has since gotten a chance to speak with Yee’s family.

“They just said they are grateful I was there with her, and that she didn’t die alone in the street, and to them I’m her angel.”

The family also expressed their thanks to Calgarians for the outpouring of support in the wake of their sudden loss.
