A decade and a half after one of Canada’s worst mass murders took place right here in the Okanagan, survivors, family members and the community in Vernon are gathering Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil.
Mark Chahal gunned down nine members of the Gakhal and Saran families as they prepared for a wedding April 5th, 1996 in Vernon. Chahal then killed himself in a motel room.
The Gakhal family candlelight vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the memorial situated outside the Vernon Public Library.
The family organized the event to honour the lives of the victims, to support the survivors and highlight the potentially devastating impact of domestic violence.
