On Thursday, an appeals court in Florence reinstated the guilty verdict against Knox and an ex-boyfriend in the 2007 slaying of her British roommate in Italy.  Knox was sentenced to 28 1/2 years in prison, raising the spectre of a long legal battle over her extradition if the conviction is confirmed.

The verdict was overturned in 2011, but the court vacated that decision and sent the case back for a third trial in Florence.

Knox returned to her home in Seattle after another Italian court overturned her conviction, and that of her former boyfriend.

Lawyers for the pair are planning to appeal this latest conviction, a process that could take another year.

If it’s upheld, there could then be a battle over whether the U.S. will extradite Knox to Italy. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday,  Knox said she would “never go willingly back” to Italy.

Kercher, 21, was found dead Nov. 2, 2007 in a pool of blood in the bedroom of the apartment she and Knox shared in the central Italian city of Perugia, where both were studying. Her throat had been slashed and she was sexually assaulted.
