Word spread on Twitter of a rumoured snowball fight in Olympic Plaza over the noon hour as Calgarians tried to make light of yet another winter blast. Nobody showed up, but at least people were thinking about having some fun with the weather.

Wet, heavy snow coated the city and surrounding areas overnight, creating commuting headaches for drivers and transit users alike.

Calgary police responded to approximately 12 crashes between midnight and 5:30a.m. However, by 10:00a.m., that number jumped to 68 collisions.

The odd snowman was spotted – one frosty boasted “victory is mine!” on a cardboard sign – another stood in the middle the road offering a laugh to disgruntled drivers.

However, as much as we love the optimism, most Calgarians feel it’s time to say goodbye to frosty and instead welcome some green grass and sunshine.
