Edmonton potholes make a mark on online forums

Spring has sprung, and so has pothole season in Edmonton. A long and snowy winter has left roads in rough shape.

While the yearly ritual of dodging potholes hasn’t changed, the methods available for Edmontonians to report them has.

The website SeeClickFix allows drivers to submit photos and reports about potholes in the city, as well as mapping them so that other drivers can avoid the craters.

The map shows some of the Edmonton potholes reported to the SeeClickFix website.

  • There are dozens of pages of reported potholes on the website, illustrating just how bad the roads are.
  • "Huge pothole forming at the bus stop on the south of Jasper in front of the Mac’s store." user Calvin Caldwell.
  • "Probably 10 significant (deep) potholes on the block (86 Ave between 104th and 105 St), and hundreds of smaller ones!" user Michele Marik.
  • "Curb lane is full of pot holes, one of the worst roads in the city." user Pat Nelson.
  • "Going west just past the Kar Tunes Repair Centre on 11510-142 St. It is quite big and by a bus stop. Cars and large trucks are dodging it which makes it for an accident waiting to happen." user Kim
  • While the popularity of sites like SeeClickFix is growing, the City of Edmonton is not monitoring third party websites for information on problems such as potholes.

"The only way to report potholes is online, or by calling 311." Laura McNabb, spokesperson for the city’s Roadway and Maintenance department.

The city currently provides an online form that allows drivers to report potholes. According to McNabb, after a problem is submitted, a report is generated so that a pothole repair team can be dispatched.

McNabb says at this point the city has no plans to collect submissions to drivers on third party sites.

"We are aware of them, but we do not monitor them. We do not collect information from third party websites."

While the city isn’t collecting the information, the sheer volume of the online reports illustrate that Edmontonians are looking for a solution to the pothole problem.
