City set to match Province’s sump pump subsidy

As expected, the City of Winnipeg is likely kicking in an extra $1 million for the sump pump subsidy program.

The City and the Province initially offered homeowners a subsidy up to $3,000 out of a $1.18 million dollar fund. But the demand to install sump pumps and backwater valves was so high, the Province came forward over a week ago saying it would put in another $1 million.

A report says City officials have received almost 500 applications at an average subsidy of $1,850. Councillors on the City’s Public Works committee are being asked to put in the matching $1 million.

The report also says the City might have to delay some sewer flood prevention work to pay for the additional incentives.
