No priceless artifacts damaged after UBC Museum of Anthropology flood

Luckily, no priceless artifacts were damaged after a water main burst at the UBC Museum of Anthropology on Wednesday afternoon.

Torrents of water flooded into the museum but the damage was contained to the area around the building’s entrance.

Crews spent Wednesday evening mopping up and vacuuming the museum’s lobby floor and staff immediately put sandbags in place.

It is still unclear why the pipe burst or how much the cleanup will cost.

“The museum itself has good contingency plans in place, so they in fact had sandbags ready to go,” said Randy Schmidt, UBC Public Affairs. “The doors were shut and sandbags were put in place, so they were able to really put up that full first line of defense and kind of contain the situation.”

The museum will be open as normal, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday.
