SASKATOON – From Swinging with the Stars to Choc la Cure and Pets in the Park, with so many non-profit organizations in Saskatoon vying for donations, charities are being forced to think outside the box when it comes to fundraising.

Stacey White is organizing this year’s Hearts for Hope masquerade ball to raise money and awareness for Family Services Saskatoon.

But she says it’s been a struggle attracting people to the event.

“We have amazing events, lots of amazing volunteers creating events that are really energetic and it’s really hard to compete on those levels to get people into the organization,” White said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We can get lots of sponsorship, we’ve got lots of donation items but we really just want people to attend the event,” she added.

Saskatoon is flooded with fundraising events like the recent Swinging with the Stars, the Ronald Mcdonald House fashion show, galas, dinners and not to mention the numerous home lotteries.

“Right now there’s so many diverse charities that are in need just as much as we are so we’re all trying not to step on one another’s toes but there are days when you go to plan an event and you find out that there’s three more events happening that same day,” said Saskatoon SPCA’s Fundraising and Donor Relations Coordinator Tricia McAuley.

The reality is charities have become competitive and they’re being forced to think outside the box to come up with new ideas to attract your dollars.

Global News asked passers by how they decide which charities to give to.

“It’s very hard to choose there’s so many great causes and you like to support everybody but you just can’t,” said one woman.

“I try to stagger them, I don’t give to the same ones all the time,” said another.

“I don’t think that we should compete, I really actually think that we should work a little bit more together so I’m trying to bridge some of the organizational events all at the same time, so I’m trying to spin off a couple of other events that have run and see if we can do cross marketing,” White said.

It may be an attractive solution not only for those charities struggling to keep up but for people donating as well.
