Emotional day as construction on St. Patrick’s bridge hits milestone

CALGARY- It’s been a day of celebration for construction crews working on the St. Patrick’s Bridge, which links St. Patrick’s Island with the East Village downtown.

Last year, they suffered a huge setback when they watched much of  their hard work wash away in the June flood.

On Wednesday, there were smiles all around after the pouring of the last 60 metres of the concrete deck.

“For me, personally, this is a huge day, to get back to where we were just an hour before the flood is significant,” says Michel Brown of CMLC. “I have never been so proud of a group of folks than the guys doing the work on this bridge.”

The deck was destroyed in the June flood, to the dismay of construction crews.

“All the workers we all were sitting on the shore, watching it  getting ripped apart,” recalls Don Herlein of Graham Construction. “It was pretty devastating.”

After months of catch-up, the bridge will have its grand opening in September.
