St. Patrick’s Island bridge taking shape

CALGARY-  Construction on the new St. Patrick’s Island pedestrian bridge is hitting another milestone- the steel arches that will form the spans of the bridge have arrived from the manufacturer in Montreal- each of them weighing between 70,000 and 200,000 kg.

Workers are using a crane to lift them in place and will then weld them together – a long process that will take until October to complete.

The concrete deck will then be poured and the cables connected.

The bridge, which will connect the East Village to Bridgeland, is scheduled to open by the end of the year.

It replaces an existing bridge near the west end of St. Patrick’s Island which does not offer a direct connection to the north bank of the Bow River.

That bridge will be removed in May; its wooden deck will be repurposed and all metal and concrete will be recycled.
