Icy QEII causes crashes, travel not advised

CALGARY – RCMP are warning drivers to stay clear of the QEII north of the city, saying it’s covered in ice.

The deteriorating road conditions have caused several collisions including one that critically injured the driver involved. He later died of his injuries in hospital.

Officials say travel is not advised between Calgary and Didsbury.

Alberta Transportation’s official road reports website lists Highway 2 as snow and ice-covered from Calgary north to Bowden.

While Calgary is expecting up to five centimetres of snow Wednesday, the weather is more severe north of the city.

Rocky Mountain House, Caroline, Nordegg, Whitecourt, Edson, Fox Creek, Swan Hills, Hinton and Grande Cache are currently under a snowfall warning.

Environment Canada estimates about 10 to 15 cm of snow over southwestern Alberta by Thursday morning.
