Murder of Montreal man in Florida ‘motivated by robbery’: police

MONTREAL – Police in Hollywood, Florida say the murder of 58-year-old Domenico Perruccio was motivated by robbery.

The suspect, 37-year-old Twane Dobard, turned himself in to police Monday night. The arrest warrant for him states he committed the unlawful act of murder “and did so with a premeditated intent to cause death and/or while engaged in the perpetration of a robbery.”

Perruccio was repeatedly stabbed outside the Winter Haven Towers condo building early Sunday morning.

He was discovered on the side of the road by area residents.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The victim’s family in Montreal is in both shock and disbelief.

“He was a wonderful man, always a fun-loving individual,” friend Anna Perrotti told Global News.

“He was always the life of the party, he was like a person who was very open, lively, he really didn’t deserve to die this way.”

Perruccio was reportedly staying at a friend’s condo and was set to leave on a cruise with his wife on Monday.

This is the second time in about a year that Canadians have been killed in the area.

Last year in nearby Hallandale Beach, a Toronto couple was murdered in what also appears to have been a robbery gone wrong.

Margo Pederson from Lara Travel maintains south Florida is a safe travel destination but she stresses tourists must use common sense.

“Don’t flash your money,  don’t wear expensive jewellry in public if you don’t want to be the topic of conversations,” Pedersen said.
