WINNIPEG – A 53-year-old Winnipeg man was killed on a North Dakota highway Sunday afternoon when he got out of his SUV to check on someone after a crash.
John Goertz was driving on the U.S. Interstate 29 about a kilometre south of the Canada-U.S. border at 12:30 p.m. when his 2009 Chevrolet Uplander was involved in one of several crashes in the area caused by poor weather conditions, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.
Goertz got out of his SUV to check on the other driver and was hit by a semi-trailer truck being driven by an Ontario man.

Goertz was taken to the Pembina County memorial Hospital and died at around 7:30 p.m., police said.
There were four other people injured in the same series of collisions.
The four got out of their vehicle, which was involved in another crash, when they were hit by yet another car involved in a separate crash.
All four were from Aurora, Col. Three were treated at Pembina County Hospital and the fourth was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
The I-29 was closed by the North Dakota Department of Transportation at around 2 p.m. due to whiteout conditions.
The highway patrol continues to investigate the crashes.
