Raw video: French troops protect displaced Muslims in Central African Republic
BANGUI – Human rights activists say more than 50 Muslims have been killed in two attacks on villages in the northwest of Central African Republic.
Amnesty International on Friday urged international peacekeepers to step up efforts to secure the anarchic countryside.
Some 4,600 African peacekeepers are in Central African Republic, but 3,200 of them remain inside the capital. France also has sent 1,600 troops though few have reached the hot spots farther north.
Joanne Mariner, Amnesty International’s senior crisis adviser, said those forces are failing Muslim communities since reprisal attacks “were entirely predictable.”
In one of the attacks on Jan. 14, Christian militiamen used machetes and knives to kill their victims in front of a mosque. The London-based organization said a second attack on a mosque left dozens dead.
