HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter came to the defence of boxing at the Canada Winter Games today, saying it’s a shame to see the sport being taken out of the competition.

The Canada Games Council has decided boxing won’t be on the schedule when the winter event is held in four years’ time in Prince George, British Columbia.

A number of boxers from Nova Scotia have made it to gold medal fights at the Games in Halifax.

Dexter describes the decision as a terrible one, particularly given Nova Scotia’s boxing heritage.

The premier says he spent some time with Nova Scotia’s boxing team this week.

The medal fights are tonight at the Halifax Forum.
