Maple Ridge family says sunroof in their brand-new truck inexplicably shattered while driving

WATCH: Lynn Nyman gives a first-hand account of what she experienced when the sunroof in her new truck exploded while she was driving.

A Maple Ridge family was driving in their brand-new $90,000 truck when they say the sunroof exploded, sending shards of glass raining down into the cabin.

Dave and Lynn Nyman were driving their 2013 Dodge Ram pick-up with their 11-year-old son inside on Highway 1 between Gaglardi and Kensington in Burnaby when the sunroof suddenly shattered.

Thankfully no one was injured.

The Nymans said they heard a loud sound right before the glass broke — almost like a gunshot. The case is similar to that of another B.C. woman, who was driving her new Hyundai Santa Fe between Cache Creek and 100 Mile House when her panoramic sunroof exploded, sending glass flying everywhere.

When the Nymans contacted Chrysler about the incident, the company apparently was not interested in seeing any photos of the damage.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The truck only had 7,000 km on it.

Dave Nyman says he tried to raise the incident as a safety issue, but says Chrysler told him that they didn’t consider it a manufacturing problem, and therefore were not interested in investigating it as a safety problem.

The Nymans ended up paying the $300 ICBC deductible to have the roof fixed.
