SASKATOON – Saskatoon city councillors are meeting on Monday evening to discuss better communication during service disruptions, streetscape and a broader bicycle program.

Council will discuss how the city can better communicate service disruptions to its residents.

On Jan. 5, a power outage in three local neighbourhoods occurred during extremely cold weather and timely information was not provided.

While there are a number of measures already in place to prevent similar circumstances from happening, administration are reviewing all tools and protocols.

The city has assigned a communications resource full-time to monitor and engage on social media.

An update on 2013 urban streetscape projects will be received to see how neighbourhoods are shaping up.

Phase one of the 20th Street West and Central Avenue streetscape projects are almost done, while Idylwyld Drive renovations are expected to start in 2014.

The first three phases of the 3rd Avenue project are nearly complete and subsequent phases will occur in coordination with the city centre plan.

Councillors will also be asked to endorse the immediate implementation projects identified in the city centre plan on Monday.

The 2013 street activity baseline study update has been released. Insightrix Research has examined how residents perceive safety and street activity in Saskatoon’s Downtown, Broadway and Riversdale areas.

It also looks at awareness levels and perceived impact of the community support program (CSP) after the first year of the pilot program.

A two-year contract was approved with the downtown business improvement district with the CSP pilot starting in July 2012.

The full report is expected in March.

Also on the agenda, council will be asked to receive a recommendation on broadening the bicycle program to ensure connectivity and safety of local cyclists.

After a three month campaign, Saskatoon Cycles will be requesting that dedicated bike lanes be installed along 4th Avenue and 24th Street.

The group is suggesting these be implemented in the spring.
