Leger poll gives Parti Quebecois edge over Liberals

MONTREAL – Quebecers are leaning towards the Parti Quebecois and the charter of values, according to Leger’s latest online poll.

In a survey conducted on Friday and Saturday, 36 per cent of Quebecers would vote for the PQ, while 33 per cent said they supported the Liberals. The Coalition Avenir Quebec garnered 17 per cent support, and eight per cent said they were throwing their support behind Quebec Solidaire.

“Mathematically, that’s a small majority for the PQ,” Leger vice-president Christian Bourque told the Journal de Montréal. The French-language newspaper published the poll results on Monday.

Support for Premier Pauline Marois was higher than for Liberal Party leader Philippe Couillard; 27 per cent of those polled said that Marois was or would be the best premier, compared with the 20 per cent that supported Couillard.

The poll, taken after the first three days of public hearings on Quebec’s proposed charter of values, revealed that support for Bill 60 had increased since last September: 48 per cent of those surveyed said they supported the legislation (up from 43 per cent last fall), while 41 per cent were opposed.
