Winnipeg’s Egyptian community rejoices in Mubarak’s resignation

For Shirin Farag and her husband, the historic moment in Egypt still hasn’t sunk in.

"I’m scared that he (President Hosni Mubarak) is tricking us because we don’t trust him at all,” said Farag. “We don’t trust his regime what so ever. I feel like this is not real. This is how good it is.”

Farag’s decades old dream of seeing her homeland free of President Mubarak has now become a reality.

"I forgive him,” said Farag. “I am done with him. I moved on in my life."

That same feeling is being felt around the world.

"It’s a feeing of freedom, despite living in a free society,” said Farag’s husband, Basil Elmayergi. “It is as if freedom has a meaning and a taste to it.”

Farag has lived in Canada for 17 years but feared for her family living under the repressive regime there. A call Friday from her brother in Cairo came as a huge relief.

"He said to me it’s over, don’t worry no more," said Farag.

While people are figuring out just what this “new” Egypt will look like, the Winnipeg couple said it couldn’t get worse.

"Whatever is going to come tomorrow will never be like yesterday," said Farag.
