$1.5 million to fix Fredericton city hall building

FREDERICTON – Fredericton is looking at a repair bill of $1.5 million to restore the masonry at its historic city hall building.

In a report to council, Ontario-based consultant Paul Jeffs says the scope of the work goes beyond just repointing or filling gaps in the mortar surrounding brick.

Some of it entails reinforcing areas that are suffering stress fractures and the foundation wall of the building requires stabilization.

The 135-year-old brick and sandstone structure was declared a national historic site in 1984.

Mayor Brad Woodside says because of that designation, the city is applying to the federal government for $500,000 to help pay for the repair work.

If Parks Canada comes through the restoration could be completed in three years instead of four.
