EDMONTON – The City is entering into week two of a targeted parking ban on specific collector/bus routes to remove windrows from the roads.

“Thanks to everyone who helped out over the last few days by keeping their cars off the collector/bus routes so our crews could plow from curb to curb,” said Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance.

“We’re making progress. It’s a lot of snow we’re moving,” Dunford added.

“Our stats have shown we have moved 335,000 cubic meters, which is a fair bit. And that’s just the beginning of the program. We’ve gotten to about 25 per cent of the collector bus routes right now.”

The targeted parking ban began on Monday, Jan. 6 and is expected to take up to three weeks.

“Given all the snow Edmonton has received so far this winter, our next step is to remove the windrows on collector/bus routes, and to do that we need a targeted parking ban to help keep the roads clear of parked vehicles while windrows are being removed.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The targeted parking ban will only be in effect on specific collector/bus routes where windrow removal is taking place. These roads will be marked with temporary ‘No Parking’ signs a minimum of 24 hours before work begins. The windrow removal location schedule is available on the City of Edmonton website.

Vehicles must be moved off the targeted parking ban routes. Vehicles that aren’t moved can be subject to a ticket and tow.

“They are in effect 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” said Dunford, “that’s when we are enforcing because that’s when we are working on those routes. It does say Monday to Friday. That means you can park there over the weekends, that’s not a problem.”

Dunford said the City will put signs up at least 24-hours ahead of the targeted parking ban, but aims to have the signs out a few days in advance.

“We try to put them up usually two days in advance… Sometimes you’ll get it where it’s put up, we’ll be a bit slower at one location or another, so we don’t get there necessarily the next day or even the day after,” he said.

A spokesperson for the City said – after the signs are put up – windrow removal will be completed within one week.

Once the windrows have been removed, vehicles can be parked on the street.

“Given the nature of windrow removal, it made more sense to ban parking only on the collector/bus routes where crews are working,” said Dunford. “We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we clear windrows over the next three weeks.”
