Edmonton woman blames windrows for parking ticket

An Edmonton woman claims she was just trying to help get traffic moving on her windrow clogged road when she received a parking ticket.

On Saturday night, Heather Rowe received a $50.00 ticket for parking on the sidewalk.

Rowe claims she didn’t and even if she had a little, the ticket isn’t fair. She says vehicles have difficulty navigating her road because people park next to windrows.

Rowe says she hired a bobcat and cleared the windrow in front of her home, but because her sidewalk is snow covered, it isn’t always obvious where the curb is.

She says if she parked further away, she would impede traffic. She thinks given how snowy this winter has been – the city should be a little more lenient.

"You can come out here and give me a ticket. Why can’t you come out here and clear the snow." Rowe said. "You created this problem of parking. The city should have some responsibility in this."

"In terms of parking on sidewalks, that is enforced when it becomes an issue of pedestrian safety." says Josh Puchailo. "We need to ensure access to wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, foot traffic – that sort of thing."

Rowe says she plans to fight the ticket. The city can’t talk about any specific case but says it does investigate any complaint it receives.
