UPDATE: Investigation launched after downtown Calgary safety scare

City of Calgary building inspectors are investigating after strong winds loosened several pieces of sheet metal from the Bank of Montreal building at 7th Avenue and 3rd Street S.W.

The Calgary Fire Department’s high-angle rescue team was called out just before 9 a.m. Monday after reports of loose flashing hanging from the 41st floor.

“When fire crews arrived they did find a piece of sheet metal, probably a metre and a half by half a metre, that had already fallen off and landed on platform below,” says Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke. “After tying themselves in and assuring their own safety, they found other pieces that were loose.”

Firefighters removed two of the pieces and screwed the remaining one in place.

If investigators determine there was a safety violation, the Bank of Montreal could face a $100,00o fine.

A similar incident happened at the BMO building around two years ago.

Monday’s gusting winds also led to two people being injured at a construction site.
