RCMP in New Brunswick have arrested the suspect in a fatal shooting at Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation after a 24-hour manhunt.
In an update Friday, police said the 47-year-old American man from Maine was taken into custody at around 2:35 p.m.
The search for the suspect began Thursday afternoon, when officers responded to a call for help. RCMP said they found a 48-year-old man who had been killed by gunfire and another man who had been injured.
About two hours later, they issued an emergency alert warning residents about an “armed and dangerous” suspect identified as 47-year-old Keith Martin.
Police asked residents to remain indoors and keep their porch lights on as officers searched for Martin overnight.
Some local businesses, including public administration buildings and Esgenoopetitj School, were closed Friday.
Just before 1:15 p.m. Friday, RCMP said the alert had ended, and people could “resume their normal activities” but should report suspicious activity immediately.
“Shortly after, at approximately 2:35 p.m., the New Brunswick RCMP confirmed they arrested a 47-year-old man in connection with this incident,” RCMP said in a release.
The man has been remanded into custody and will appear in court at a later date.
