Smooth sailing on Steinbach streets

Winnipeg snow clearing crews are slowly making progess on those tough to manoever ice ruts.

Warmer weather is allowing the city to salt streets to help melt some of the ice and crews should have all streets scraped to the pavement by Monday.

Further south in Steinbach, ice ruts were never an issue.

While the city is smaller than Winnipeg, it experiences the same weather, and clearing crews make a point of hitting the roads as soon as they can.

“They go out immediately after the storm occasionally,” said Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen. “They actually go out during the storm depending on safety factors.”

Goertzen says the city also makes a point of cleaning all roads within three days to prevent build up on the street.

“Once the streets are hard packed it more difficult to clear streets,” he said.

That’s been the main struggle in Winnipeg.

Ice ruts have been a problem for weeks. Around 12,000 calls relating to snow clearing have been answered by 311.

In Steinbach, Goertzen said he averages between two to three calls from residents upset with the snow clearing every winter.
