Hwy 1 reopened after collision; hundreds of bottles of wine cleared

Police say a 30-year-old Abbotsford male was operating a Kenworth semi-trailer filled with wine, headed eastbound on Highway #1 when he lost control of the vehicle and drove through the centre median of the highway. RCMP handout

Highway 1 is now open westbound about two kilometres west of Hope after two tractor trailers collided head-on.

The closure was due to an accident, but the delay in opening the road was due to a difficult vehicle recovery. The reopening time was delayed several times throughout the night.

Police say a 30-year-old Abbotsford man in a tractor trailer carrying hundreds of bottles of wine was traveling eastbound on Highway 1 when he lost control, crossed the centre lane and hit another tractor trailer being driven by a 57-year-old man from Delta.

No one was hurt in the head-on crash but both trucks sustained extensive damage. The mess from all of the broken bottles and spilled wine took 10 hours to clean up.

“Fortunately neither driver was injured in this collision,” says Cpl. Robert McDonald, spokesperson for RCMP Traffic Services. “However, both vehicles sustained extensive damage, with one semi’s trailer ripped apart, by the force of the collision. And of course there was significant damage to the cargo.”

Charges of driving without due care and attention were laid against the Abbotsford man.

Drivers were being detoured via Highway 7.
