A massive expansion of the Roberts Bank container terminal in Delta has been referred for an environmental assessment by an independent review panel.
The project, called Roberts Bank Terminal 2, could be operational by the mid-2020s if it’s approved. Port Metro Vancouver estimates that container traffic will double over the next 10 to 15 years.
The new terminal would be located about 5.5 km offshore from the mainland, to “reduce the impact on sensitive marine habitat and limit the amount of dredging required.”
The recently-opened South Fraser Perimeter Road connects to the port, with the goal of removing trucks and other traffic going to and from the port in Delta from existing municipal roads.
Port Metro Vancouver says that even with improvements to existing terminals, the west coast will still need more container capacity by the mid-2020s.
