Royal University Hospital parkade in Saskatoon still open for parking

SASKATOON – The parkade at Royal University Hospital remains open and available for parking as site preparation work continues for construction of the new Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan.

Sections on the first three levels unrelated to construction work were closed in May 2013 as a precautionary measure for testing and analysis due to inspections related to site preparation construction.

“The test results came back in October 2013 and showed there were issues related to the cable structure in some parts of the parkade and those are the sections we had closed as a precautionary measure,” said Nilesh Kavia, vice president of corporate services for the region.

“We will continue to keep those areas closed as we work through what our options might be to address the issue. We know this closure was unexpected and had reduced the total number of stalls available.”

As the region works on a solution to address the parking stall shortage created by the closure, other sections on the first three levels will close over the first few weeks of 2014 for demolition work.

A portion of level 1 surrounding the skywalk entrance will be progressively and permanently closed in early January where the new hospital will be built, followed by closures on levels 2 and 3 in subsequent weeks.

Level 2 will then become dedicated to visitor parking only sometime by early February and a new public entry lane into the parkade will open.

“While fewer parking stalls than expected will be available as we prepare for construction of the new hospital, Saskatoon Health Region is making every effort to first accommodate the parking needs of patients, their families and visitors,” said Kavia.

The region is asking for patience and asking anyone coming to RUH to allow extra time to find parking.
