Flight backlog means continued delays in Montreal

Watch: Cold wreaks Montreal flight havoc

MONTREAL – Some passengers flying in and out of the Montreal Trudeau International Airport can expect further delays Wednesday as the flight backlog continues to clear following Tuesday’s large scale ‘ground stop.’

Due to the intense cold, Pearson International Airport ordered a “ground stop,” banning all flights to and from Toronto until at least 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Airplanes were not permitted to land for much of Tuesday morning in Toronto due to extreme cold weather that impacted equipment and safety of employees.

Notice on the Montréal-Trudeau airport website, advising passengers that flights are still experiencing delays on January 8, 2013.

In Montreal, 41 flights were cancelled on Wednesday, a much lower figure than the total cancellation toll from Tuesday of 128 flights.

In Toronto, as of 11:00 a.m. ET Wednesday,  the Greater Toronto Airports Authority confirmed that over 400 flights had been cancelled overall.

Although airlines are working hard to get help passengers continue in their travels, Canadian airlines are warning travellers not to show up at airports in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and cities in the eastern U.S. without checking their flight status first.
