Pesa was driving with his girlfriend beside him in the vehicle. He was taken to hospital in critical life-threatening condition, while his girlfriend suffered minor injuries.
Pesa leaves behind a large extended family, who was praying for his recovery.
“I still can’t take this in, it’s still processing,” explains cousin Kaesha Adolfo. “Honestly, I haven’t cried it out yet. It’s still sinking in.”
Family say Pesa had just returned from a month-long trip to the Philippines, where he helped victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.
Police charged Kulwinder Singh Chohan with impaired driving, impaired driving over 0.08 and impaired driving causing injury.
Officials say these charges are likely to be upgraded to impaired driving causing death.
