EDMONTON – Christina Morgenstern, her husband and three children – aged 10, 6, and 7 – were driving on Highway 37 near Onoway around noon on Boxing Day, when they suffered a frightening ordeal.
“The guy ahead of us had tapped his brakes and my husband let off the gas and we hit an icy patch. It swerved us all over the highway,” Morgenstern said.
Their van rolled two and half times. The mother of three said that when she opened her eyes, her husband wasn’t in his seat.
“And I heard my kids scream, and I didn’t know if they were hurt or just scared.”
Luckily no one was seriously injured, including the family’s dog, who was thrown from the van.
Several vehicles stopped to help the shaken-up family, but it’s one couple in particular who made a lasting impression on the Morgensterns.

A pair from Wabamun stayed with them on the side of the road for roughly three hours, offering the warmth of their vehicle while the Morgensterns waited for a ride from a family member.
And since the couple was coming back from an ice-fishing trip, they were even able to offer the Morgenstern family a Boxing Day barbecue.
“He pulled it out, started grilling up some burgers and fed my kids.”
It was enough to restore Christina Morgenstern’s faith in humanity.
“All of the bad stuff that’s going on in the world, and just to have that one good act happen to you when you’re having a horrible day – it’s amazing.”
