An Alberta family is looking for two Good Samaritans in B.C. who jumped into the icy Elk River following a tragic crash earlier this month.

On Dec. 1 the Altvater family was driving home near Fernie when their minivan hit a snowy patch and landed upside down in the river.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A passing couple from Fernie jumped into the water and managed to pull out Richard Altvater, his wife Kunthea and their three children from the submerged minivan.

Kunthea sadly did not survive and later died in hospital. One of her sons is still fighting for his life.

Altvater’s family is now wanting to thank the heroes who put their own lives at risk to help.

“It humbles me to think that they would do that, that a pure stranger would go into that freezing water,” says Norbet Altvater, Richard’s family.
